Sharpening levers on Small Harp/Lyre
This is the typical 14 string harp that we build, however we placed sharpening leavers on this one. This allows you to increase each string by half a step which allows you to play in many different scales.
here's the link to our 14 stringed harp listing.

I hope this helps you build your own lyre. Masterclass: www.calebbyerly.org/products/masterclasskinnor This instrument on our website: www.calebbyerly.org/products/7-stringed-kinnor-lyre

The Shepherd's Sound Scares the Enemy
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
In the ancient times of the Scandinavian mountain pastures, the shepherds would be in charge of tending to the needs of their livestock. In many cases predators, like wolves or bear, would creep in fences looking for prey. The watchful eye of the shepherd would scare off the predators with the sound of the Bukkehorn. This instrument projects beautiful tones and melodies but it can also be a ver...
How to Make and Tune a Viking Bukkehorn

In this video, I share the basics of how I make a Bukkehorn. Keep in mind that every horn is different and the techniques must change slightly depending on the species, length and density of each horn. If you'd like to learn more, let me know and I would be happy to answer questions. I've considered to make longer, more detailed tutorials if people are interested. The deep Bukkehorns I make: ww...

    Great video, very informative. I would have thought the placing of the fingerholes was much more mathematical, but it's just "kinda pick out the middle of the horn" and the fingers "about an inch spaced apart" (and then of course some microtuning).

    • @calebbyerly
      @calebbyerly 6 місяців тому

      Yup, for the most part. And each horn is different, so that plays a big role too.

    I loved learning all the issues that can come up with tuning these types of instruments. I had no idea about micro-tuning! I couldn't figure out why my instrument wouldn't tune correctly. It was because I didn't know how to micro-tune.

    Hello bro, your work is great, ask, is the goat horn mandatory? could it be cow? Do you have or know of any historical finds of the instrument, I want to make one for my historical recreation group.

    • @calebbyerly
      @calebbyerly 7 місяців тому

      The Bukkehorn is traditionally a goat horn, however they have been made of cow horns. I've made some from a cow horn before and it works. Different sound but it can be tuned in the same scale. There are a few resources online if you search Bukkehorn history.

    Thanks a lot for this video! I'm just starting to make a horn and I was wondering about the mouth piece. Seems there is actually too diameter not just a straight hole right? You have first a thin hole that goes through, then on the extremity you have a bigger diameter right? could it be straigh hole (one diameter only) kind of like a didgeridoo? (I don't have mechanical tool and do by hand so... hehe)

    • @calebbyerly
      @calebbyerly 9 місяців тому

      Thank you. Yup, the internal diameter tapers and gets wider. You want to look for a horn that has a flatter internal spacing.
